Local Students Learn Team-Building with Big Ten Volunteers

Get a G! Get G! We need an R! The racing, the encouragement, the excitement. It’s all part of the Hula-Scramble – the Spartan station at Chicago Youth Sports Alliance Field Day. 350-400 students grades 4th – 6th from local elementary schools demonstrated their team skills at all the Big 10 stations on June 3, 2017.

Community Service committee chair Jon Labaj recruited ~15 local alumni for this annual event: “It was hard to tell who was having more fun: the kids or our volunteers! It was amazing to see our community of Spartans come together with people from all different backgrounds to make sure these deserving kids started their summer with a smile.”

The Chicago YSA Field Day is a one-day athletics and fitness based event for elementary school age children living in inner-city Chicago. The event promotes the importance of fitness and physical activity through a series of athletic, educational, and team building activities. Additionally, the event allows students from local school systems to experience the excitement of the Big Ten and learn about the importance of higher education through interaction with Chicago-based alumni.

“Volunteering at the YSA Field Day was very fun and rewarding. I enjoyed contributing to a worthwhile cause, catching up with old friends and meeting new, energetic and committed Spartan alumni. I can’t wait to do it again next year,” shared Past President and first time field day volunteer Amy Pisani.
